A 75-minute U10 session at a glance

An example for around twelve children, two small pitches and one focus: take on opponents and recognise an open goal. Adapt the times to your group; short instructions and repeated ball actions matter more than a rigid schedule.

Session plan: five blocks

TimeActivityOrganisation and focus
10 minArrival with a ballSix pairs in dribbling lanes: changes of pace and direction.
15 min1v1 towards two goalsApprox. 12 × 16 m per duel; cone goals, short attacks and frequent role switches.
15 min2v2 to end zonesThree pitches of roughly 16 × 12 m; use space and carry the ball into the end zone.
20 min3v3 to four goalsTwo pitches about 22 × 18 m; each team attacks two cone goals.
15 minFree 3v3Keep rules simple, finish with one short question to the players.

Total: 75 minutes including short transitions. Add water and rest breaks according to conditions and the children.

Set up the pitches

  • Mark two small pitches next to each other; cone goals work if you have no mini goals.
  • Keep spare balls nearby to restart quickly after goals or out-of-play moments.
  • With twelve children, run two 3v3 games in parallel so everyone plays.
  • Rotate roles: everyone attacks, defends and has chances to score.

Equipment: balls, cones and bibs. Mini goals are optional.

Three practical small-sided games

1. Change-of-direction duel

15 min · 1v1

An attacker faces a defender with a goal to the left and one to the right.

Setup & play

Attackers choose the open goal, then switch roles quickly. Change partners after a few short attempts.

Adapt it

Easier: wider goals and more starting space. Harder: let the defender start closer.

2. Two goals to choose from

20 min · 3v3

Each team attacks two goals, encouraging observation, dribbling and timely passes.

Setup & play

Play on two pitches in parallel. Rotate groups after short rounds of around three minutes.

Adapt it

Too crowded? Add space. Too easy? Narrow the goals slightly without imposing unnecessary touch limits.

3. Reach the end zone

15 min · 2v2

Score by dribbling under control into the opponents’ end zone.

Setup & play

Run three small games side by side. Reset quickly after every score.

Adapt it

Adjust the end-zone width or use corner target zones for an extra challenge.

Coach with questions, not speeches

  • “Which goal is open now?”
  • “What changes when you approach the defender at speed?”
  • “Who can support you if the path closes?”

Brief interventions are enough. Let children test their own ideas on the pitch.

Adapt for different group sizes

PlayersSuggested format
8Two 2v2 games or 3v3 with short rotations.
10Two 2v2 games with supporting players, or 3v3 plus 2v2.
12Two simultaneous 3v3 games.
16Four 2v2 pitches or two 4v4 pitches.

Pitch sizes are guidance, not fixed rules. Choose a setup that creates frequent decisions and little waiting.

U10 football training FAQs

Must every session last 75 minutes?

No. This is one adaptable example. Shorter sessions can work well when they are organised and engaging.

Do I need mini goals?

No. Cone gates are enough for many of these games.

Should players stay in fixed positions?

Let young players experience different roles in attack and defence.

What is most important?

Frequent involvement, enjoyment and repeated decisions in small-sided games.
